Whether a family is using a nanny agency or attempting to hire a nanny independently, most prefer a nanny is CPR and First Aid certified. In fact, the vast majority of families we speak with at Kindred Families, list it as a requirement. We agree. It is our professional opinion that this should always be a mandatory requirement and never a preference.
Preparation for CPR and First Aid is Key
When it comes to the health and safety of children, one should never be unprepared if the unthinkable were to happen. It is for this reason that we ask all of the families that register with Kindred Families if they are CPR and First Aid certified. If they are not, we ask if they would like to learn how to become certified. It is absolutely mandatory that all nannies that register with our agency become certified. However, as parents, you should also obtain CPR and First Aid certification. Is it really enough for families that only their childcare provider be certified? What if an emergency situation occurs when the nanny is off duty? Are you, as parents, really willing to take that risk in a life or death situation?
Not all certifications are created equal
When looking at certification courses, not all are the same. Many workplaces require training delivered by an instructor. This can be to meet OSHA requirements or company policy. In cases like these certificates of completion from an online-only course are not accepted. However, when it comes to providing care in a private home, the most important thing is that the nanny has a clear understanding of what emergency action to take and how to do it. This is why we believe it to be acceptable to take an online course. After all, they are just informative and often more convenient and affordable. With COVID concerns, many of our nannies are not willing to take an in-person class. Some also find the cost of an in-person course is also out of reach.
For the Children’s Protection…
It is the responsibility of both the parents and their children’s nanny to provide protection for the children at all times. This is why we recommend that families and nannies take an Adult, Child And Baby First Aid/CPR/AED Online certification course.
